The flu is responsible for 250,0000 to 500,000 deaths worldwide each year, a statistic which includes the damage caused by Swine Flu (H1N1). There has been considerable interest in Beta 1, 3D Glucan and potential effect on colds and flu.
Medical authoritative site WebMD also lists Beta Glucan as used by people to boost the immune system and help defend against the Swine Flu Virus, colds and seasonal flu.
“Beta glucans are used for high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, and HIV/AIDS. Beta glucans are also used to boost the immune system in people whose body defenses have been weakened by conditions such chronic fatigue syndrome, or physical and emotional stress; or by treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy. Beta glucans are also used for colds (common cold), flu (influenza), H1N1 (swine) flu, allergies, hepatitis, Lyme disease, asthma, ear infections, aging, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.” - WebMD on Beta GlucanA 2004 study found that pulmonary lesion score and viral replication rate in Swine Influenza Virus infected pigs was significantly reduced in pigs treated with Beta Glucan prior to exposure. The study authors note: "These findings support the potential application of beta-glucan as prophylactic/treatment agent in influenza virus infection." [1]
A 2008 study done to study the potential use of Beta Glucan to prevent cold and flu found that "Participants receiving the yeast-based product had significantly fewer symptoms and significantly shorter duration of symptoms when compared with subjects taking a placebo." [2]
According to Dr. Gehard Gerber, one danger of Swine Flu is the possibility that it may combine with another, more lethal flu strain and cause devastation before a vaccine can be formulated. Read the Article by Dr. Gerhard Gerber.Dr. Paul Clayton, adds that antibiotics are of no use in treating viruses and a vaccine for a new strain of Swine Flu won't be ready for 6 months after the epidemic has started. New strains of flu form each year, which is why a new vaccine is developed each year. But, what happens when the flu virus mutates beyond what the vaccine has been prepared for? You might not be protected anymore - it happens each year. With a super-charged immune system, you could be protected no matter how the flu virus combines and forms new strains.
